Is Online Sports Betting Legal In Ohio?

LegalitiesThere are not any state gambling laws in Ohio that prohibit citizens from betting on sports at legally licensed and regulated offshore sportsbooks that accept USA players. However, you must be sure that the sportsbook at which you are betting is indeed legitimately licensed and subject to genuine regulatory oversight from a jurisdiction that has legalized online gambling for the regions it governs. The sportsbooks you see on this page all fall under that category and are verified to be legal betting sites that are licensed to provide their services. We have included US friendly options for you that are all highly regarded as premium destinations that can be trusted to offer a high quality betting experience and safe environment for all players.

State based online sports betting is not permitted in Ohio, nor is offline sports betting. There are several US federal laws that govern US based sports betting across the country. US based sportsbook gambling is prohibited throughout the country with the exception of four states: Nevada, Delaware, Montana and Oregon. This means that if Ohio wanted to start offering any type of state licensed sports betting to their residents, they'd have to violate federal law. Naturally, this is not likely to occur. This also means that Ohio residents who are eager to enjoy legally sanctioned online sports betting will need to seek access to licensed and regulated internet sportsbooks that are based outside of the US or at land based sportsbooks in Vegas. There are also some options for betting on sports in Delaware, thought they are rather limited.

Do Federal Regulations Affect Ohio's Gambling Laws?

Ohio actually allows all forms of commercial gambling, except for tribal gambling and sports betting, but Federal laws do have a direct influence on sports betting in the US. Unlike other gambling platforms that are addressed in Ohio state gambling laws, when it comes to sports betting, the state is compelled to uphold the Federal USA sports betting laws that play a part in governing US based sportsbook gambling. There are three specific laws that affect sports betting—the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), the Federal Wire Act and the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). PASPA prevents Ohio from having any Las Vegas-style physical sportsbooks or any other form of state-regulated sports gambling. The Federal Wire Act prevents US-based sportsbooks from accepting bets and the UIGEA monitors banks and how they process transactions stemming from online gambling. These federal laws combine to enforce sports betting in the US, but they don’t affect the offshore sportsbooks suggested on this site. The offshore sportsbooks listed here are sanctioned and regulated and able to accept US bettors.

Casino And Racetracks In Ohio

If you're inside Ohio and want to find some quality places at which to gamble, then you can choose from quite a few good casinos and racetracks in the state. If you're around the Columbus area and want to press your luck, you can hit up the Hollywood Casinoand play on over 2,500 slot machines, nearly 80 table games, and you can even sit down in their huge poker room that's made up of 36 different poker tables. And that's only one of a few Hollywood locations in Ohio. There's another in Toledo which features over 2,000 slots, 60 table games, and a 20-table poker room; and also one in Dayton at Dayton Raceway, which features over a thousand slots, harness racing, simulcast racing, plenty of attractions, and much more. Please note that none of these brick and mortar casino locations in Ohio offer sports betting.

The Horseshoe is also another popular spot in Ohio, and there are two main Horseshoe locations, one in Cincinnati and one in Cleveland. The one in Cincinnati features nearly 2,000 slot machines, almost 90 table games, and over 30 poker tables. You can also find lots of shopping, multiple dining options, top-flight hotel rooms, valet parking, and more. The Horseshoe in Cleveland features over 1,700 slots, nearly 90 table games, and 30 poker tables in a huge poker room. This is another legitimate casino that offers great rooms, plenty of dining options, parking, entertainment, and more. This isn't Harrah's or the Venetian in Vegas or anything, but for Ohio, these are great, high-class casinos that will definitely give you plenty of betting options.

There are also a couple of new casinos slated to open later this year, like Belterra Park Gaming and Entertainment, which is essentially a racetrack and casino hybrid. Then you have the Hard Rock Rocksino opening up in Northfield, which will be a huge casino, featuring over 2,200 slots, over 100 gaming tables, a famous Hard Rock Cafe, and a lot more.

Ohio's Major Sports Teams

If you're not an Ohioan and love sports, then you might be a little jealous of the state, especially in the next few years to come. Ohio has quite a few major sports franchises, and their football and basketball teams look to be improving every year. In baseball, they have two MLB teams: The Cleveland Indians and the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds haven't won anything in a long time, but they're still a revered ball club. The Indians, with Francona managing them today, are also a force to be reckoned with. And if you love sports movies, you might actually remember the Indians from the Major League franchise starring Charlie Sheen and Tom Berringer. These comedies were considered some of the best baseball movies of all time.

Ohio NFL Football Teams

Ohio is home to two NFL franchises in the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals are undeniably the better of the two. Residents also get to experience top college football through Ohio State University, one of the best teams in the current league.

Cleveland Browns 2017-2018 Football Season

Unfortunately, the Cleveland Browns are the worst team in the NFL right now. They finished their last season 1-15 and last in the AFC North. Their season starter 0-14, a franchise record, and their only win came against a struggling Chargers team. Head coach Hue Jackson has been unsuccessful and the team seems to be misfiring on all cylinders. Better to bet against the Browns, as that is practically guaranteed.

Cincinnati Bengals 2017-2018 Football Season

The Bengals, on the other hand, have been quite successful, though they have suffered a recent dip in form. They went 6-9-1 in the last season, despite possessing Pro Bowl talent in DT Geno Atkins, QB Andy Dalton, DE Carlos Dunlap, WR A.J. Green and OT Andre Whitworth. This was a regression from their previous 12-4 record. The Bengals are a Playoff-caliber team and will try to secure a berth in the postseason. QB Andy Dalton is one of the best in the league, and he has plenty of offensive weapons available to him. Their defense is one of the best in the league and wins a lot of fantasy points. Overall, they should be a safe bet in most games.

Ohio College Football Teams

The Ohio State Buckeyes are currently one of the best teams in the NCAA. They are expected to be ranked third this year and head coach Urban Meyer will be shooting for a spot in the Championship game. Last year, they went 11-2 and lost in controversial fashion to rivals the University of Michigan. They have a new offensive coordinator in Kevin Wilson who should bring some spark to the team. Their defense is strong with Sam Hubbard, Jerome Baker and Joey Bosa. QB J.T. Barrett is a talent and has enough of at his disposal to make this team great. The Buckeyes are a smart bet and have Playoff intentions.

Ohio NBA Teams

In basketball, well, everyone knows which team plays in Ohio. Even if you live halfway around the world, you heard the news last year about King James (LeBron) coming home to Cleveland after his four-year trip to South Beach with the Miami Heat. LeBron came home to Cleveland to shore up the Cavaliers' roster alongside Kyrie Irving and newly acquired Kevin Love. Some very, very bad luck stung the Cavs last season, but they're looking incredibly strong this season upcoming.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Their Odds for an NBA Championship

As long as the Ohio State Buckeyes can take care of the Virginia Tech Hokies in their first week, the rest of their schedule is pretty much smooth sailing. Neither Michigan team has been a threat to Ohio in close to a decade, and this isn't the year that trend changes. If Ohio can win their first game, they should coast into the four-team playoff for a second year, with a conference championship in tow. So their odds of winning again aren't really shocking to anyone. The team from Ohio that we feel compelled to talk about here, however, is the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs had some horrible things happen to them last year, and the odds of them happening against are astronomical.

Anderson Varejao is a big man with some serious talent. He's not Kareem come-again or anything on that level, but for the Eastern Conference, big Andy V is a pillar. He got hurt pretty early on last year, which put a lot of pressure on LeBron and Kevin Love to do more work down low. Tragically, Kevin Love also got hurt when his shoulder got separated in the first round of the playoffs against the Boston Celtics. He required surgery and had to sit out the remainder of the playoffs. Then, after battling injuries all year, Kyrie Irving, one of the best point guards in the league, made it back for the Finals against the Golden State Warriors. However, he only lasted a game before breaking his knee cap in half. This left LeBron James and inexperienced players like Matthew Dellavedova going up against the entire Warriors roster without any help. Even still, the Cavs took them to six games and gave all they had.

Just imagine next year with a healthy roster. With Varejao and Love and Irving healthy, there's nothing that can stop the Cavaliers from getting the top seed in the East, and there's no Eastern Conference team that can beat them. The Bulls have the best shot, but Derrick Rose's health is a see saw, and that team is pretty dysfunctional on its best day. We predict that the Cavs will get back to the Finals this year, and with a healthy squad they will win against any team to come out of the West, be it San Antonio, Oklahoma City or a rematch with Golden State.

We have the Cavs around 4:1 this year, and we predict they will win 65 games in the regular season. They're going to be the safest bet for Ohioans this year, far and away, and the Cavs should bring home some hardware for Cleveland next spring.

Our prediction isn't written in stone here, so please don't put your entire paycheck on what we say. Follow along with the sport and bet using your head. That goes for any sport: Bet after you research and find out which team is statistically likely to win.
